Unless you are completely brand new to my page (in which case, Welcome!), you will know of my love affair with Odd Society Spirits. However, before we get into the post, I’d like to first and foremost share my love & condolences to the entire Odd Society family. Gord & Miriam are the incredible founders & owners, and this past week they unexpectedly lost Gord’s brother, Ralph. Ralph was a part of the distillery from the beginning. Though he lived in Alberta, he would often come & visit & get to work tinkering & fixing the pieces of machinery that he knew best. I got to meet him a few times & I always got the best energy from him & he’d tell me about what he was working on. I know it’s a tiny drop, but I’d like to dedicate today’s dram to Ralph, his family, & friends that are missing him the most.
Odd Society Spirits is a special place and as soon as you walk into the distillery / cocktail lounge you start to understand why. They are true to their name and create all sorts of odd things. Today’s dram is no exception. This is a beautiful creation combining candy cap & porcini mushrooms into the whisky! The first few rounds they experimented with became so sweet that it was liqueur-like! Through practice, they found the balance of mushroom & whisky. To note, this is the first release in a new line from the distillery all about Community Collaborations!
If you haven’t experienced Odd Society Spirits yet, go dive deep! Notable expressions of theirs are the perfect Gibson, Wallflower gin, a creme de cassis, which was created as a BC craft version, their Mia Amata, which is my favourite amaro, & their whisky range which is full of surprises!
Tasting notes: The nose presents as sweet with a hint of umami. I’ve used this whisky in classes & no one has said mushrooms as a note when we nose or taste it. However, as soon as I say it, the group agrees that’s the missing note they couldn’t identify! On the palate is the chewiness of mushrooms combined with praline pecans.
